On that Sunday morning, Posey was found in his bed with a gunshot wound to his head. The investigation revealed that a hunting rifle had been used to fire a single round while he was asleep. The events took a strange turn when his wife of 11 years, Tracy Broom Posey, walked into the Pickens County Sheriff's Office around 7:20 a.m. to report that her husband had been shot and she believed he was deceased.
Deputies arriving at the Posey Hill Road residence confirmed Justin's death. The investigation quickly focused on his wife, as authorities believed no one else was in the home at the time of the shooting. It was also revealed that deputies had been called to the couple's home six times in the preceding two years for various disturbances, though none had previously involved a dispute between the husband and wife.
Tracy Broom Posey, then 31 years old, was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
