On a Sunday evening in March 2015, the life of 38-year-old Ryan O'Neill Tatum was tragically cut short in Anderson, South Carolina. He had spent the night out with a woman he had been dating for about five months. After the club, he did the gentlemanly thing and drove her and another woman home to her residence at the Brookside apartments. It was an act of kindness that would unexpectedly cost him his life.
Upon their arrival, the woman's brother, Raeford Eaddy Wideman, emerged from the
residence. Wideman had never met Tatum before. According to his sister, she had been drinking heavily that night and was passed out in the back seat of the car. She believes her brother’s concern for her safety, seeing her in such a state with a man he didn't know, led to a fatal misunderstanding. In a sudden and violent turn of events, Wideman shot Tatum. Emergency responders found Tatum deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into Tatum's death moved swiftly, and authorities quickly identified Raeford Wideman as the primary suspect. He was arrested and charged with murder. During court proceedings, the families of both Tatum and Wideman came face to face in an emotional bond hearing. Tatum's family described him as a loving father of three who was only trying to do the right thing by ensuring his date got home safely. Wideman’s sister expressed her sorrow, stating the tragedy could have been avoided and that she knew her brother did not act with malicious intent. A judge ultimately denied bond for Wideman, and he remained in custody.
In November 2017, the case against Raeford Wideman came to a conclusion in an Anderson County courtroom. After hearing the evidence presented by the 10th Circuit Solicitor's Office, a jury found Wideman guilty of the murder of Ryan O'Neill Tatum. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced him to serve 30 years in prison, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that began with a misunderstanding and ended in a senseless loss of life.
