On March 21, 2015, Jonathan Arden Argoe, a 53-year-old man, died from gun violence in his home on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina. His wife, Doris Spann Argoe, then 45 years old, called 911 claiming she had shot her husband in self-defense after he allegedly came at her with a knife.
Following an investigation, authorities disputed Doris Argoe's version of events and charged her with murder. Investigators believed she had staged the scene to support her self-defense claim.

In a turn of events, Doris Argoe entered into a plea agreement. With the consent of Jonathan Argoe's family, she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In June 2016, a Charleston County court sentenced her to 15 years in prison for the death of her husband.
