In the summer of 2015, the life of 35-year-old Aron Lucas Young was tragically cut short in what authorities described as a drug deal that spiraled into a fatal encounter. Young, a male from Gastonia, found himself in Blacksburg, South Carolina, in the early morning hours of June 10th, where he and another man, 43-year-old Jerry Dwayne Farmer, were shot and killed.
The grim discovery of their bodies in a burning pickup truck in neighboring York County late on the night of June 11th set in motion a homicide investigation that would uncover a story of violence and a desperate attempt to conceal a heinous crime.
Following the discovery, investigators from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office worked to piece together the events that led to the two men's deaths. Their efforts soon led them to identify two suspects: Steven Eugene Parker and Donald Edward Creswell Jr., both from Blacksburg. Both men were subsequently arrested and faced murder charges in connection with the deaths of Young and Farmer. The investigation suggested that after the shooting, the victims' bodies were loaded into a pickup truck and driven to a rural, wooded area in York County, where the vehicle was intentionally set on fire in an attempt to destroy any evidence of the crime.
The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for the families of the victims. In April of 2018, after a two-day bench trial at the Cherokee County Courthouse, Steven Parker, then 36, was found guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The court sentenced him to two life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. Forensic evidence, including DNA and cell phone records, played a crucial role in securing his conviction. At the time of Parker's sentencing, the charges against his alleged accomplice, Donald Edward Creswell Jr., were still pending. The case left a lasting scar on the community and served as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of drug-related violence. Young's mother later spoke about her son's ongoing struggle with addiction, expressing her profound loss and desire for all those involved to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
