In a quiet corner of Blacksburg, South Carolina, a sequence of events unfolded in June of 2015 that would end in the violent deaths of two men, one of whom was 43-year-old Dwayne Jerry Farmer. What authorities would later describe as a drug deal that spiraled into a fatal encounter began at a residence in Cherokee County. It was there that Farmer, a male from Gastonia, North Carolina, and his companion, Aron Lucas Young, aged 35, were shot and killed.
The grim discovery of their remains would not be made until their bodies were found inside a burning pickup truck in a wooded area in the neighboring York County, a desperate and brutal attempt to conceal the crime.
The investigation into the fiery scene quickly led law enforcement to two local men, Steven Eugene Parker and Donald Edward Creswell Jr.. Both were subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder in connection with the deaths of Farmer and Young. As the legal process began to unfold, it was revealed that both suspects had prior encounters with the law. Parker, in particular, had a significant criminal history that included a previous prison sentence for accessory to murder. The motive for the killings was believed to be a dispute that erupted during a drug transaction.
The path to justice for Dwayne Jerry Farmer and Aron Lucas Young saw one of the accused, Donald Edward Creswell Jr., ultimately plead guilty to lesser charges of accessory after the fact for his role in the aftermath of the killings, receiving a 15-year prison sentence. Steven Eugene Parker, the man identified as the shooter, was convicted of both murders. For his part in the deaths of the two men, Parker was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences in prison, ensuring he would not have the possibility of parole.
