On a tragic afternoon in August of 2015, Donte Doyle, a 29-year-old man from Columbia, South Carolina, lost his life in a senseless act of violence. On August 11, while standing outside his apartment at the River Oaks Apartments on Bush River Road in Lexington County, Doyle was shot multiple times. He was simply smoking a cigarette when the gunfire erupted. He was rushed to Lexington Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The incident left his family and friends mourning the loss of a man described as a cheerful person who loved his family and enjoyed life.
The investigation into Doyle's murder, led by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, would reveal a case of mistaken identity rooted in gang violence. Authorities determined that Donte Doyle was not the intended target of the shooting. The man responsible, Leonard Mickens Jr., a known gang member, had set out that day to kill a rival. Doyle tragically happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and according to prosecutors, was wearing pants of a certain color that made him a target.
Two years after the fatal shooting, in August 2017, investigators charged Leonard Mickens Jr., who was already in federal custody on a separate weapons charge, with the murder of Donte Doyle. The case finally went to trial in April 2022. During the week-long proceedings, a forensic pathologist testified that Doyle had been shot at least five times, with the fatal shot being fired while he was already on the ground.
Ultimately, a Lexington County jury found Leonard Mickens Jr. guilty of murder. In April 2022, seven years after Donte Doyle's untimely death, his killer was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction brought a measure of closure to Doyle's family, who had waited years for justice for a man who was tragically and mistakenly killed.
