In the spring of 2024, a series of events tragically culminated in the death of 16-year-old Jayden Alexander Scales-Amiker, a Black male from Columbia, South Carolina. The devastating incident unfolded from a dispute between teenagers that escalated into deadly violence, leaving two families to mourn and a community to grapple with the consequences of youth-related crime and vigilante justice.
The catalyst for the fatal encounter occurred on the evening of April 10, 2024.
On that day, four juveniles, one of whom was Jayden, were allegedly involved in the armed robbery of another minor near Decker Boulevard. They reportedly took personal items from the victim, setting in motion a tragic chain of events. The following day, April 11, the father of the robbery victim, 35-year-old Marvin D. Archie, decided to take matters into his own hands. Accompanied by several other adults, including 19-year-old Amir Fairwell, 24-year-old Darryl Hamilton, and 20-year-old Nadia Hamilton, Archie confronted the group of juveniles he believed were responsible for robbing his child.
The confrontation took a fatal turn in the 100 block of Angel Garden Way at around 7 p.m. During the altercation, one of the juveniles, a 14-year-old who was with Jayden, produced a pistol that had been illegally modified to fire automatically. The young shooter opened fire, and in the ensuing chaos, both Marvin D. Archie and Jayden Alexander Scales-Amiker were struck and killed. Authorities believe the 14-year-old lost control of the modified weapon and accidentally shot his friend, Jayden. The 14-year-old shooter also sustained a gunshot wound to his lower body during the incident and was transported to a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement began an extensive investigation that led to multiple arrests. The 14-year-old shooter was taken into custody after being released from the hospital and charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a handgun under the age of 18. The other two surviving juveniles from the initial robbery were also arrested and faced charges of armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a handgun under 18, and kidnapping. The investigation did not stop with the juveniles. The three adults who accompanied Marvin D. Archie to the confrontation—Amir Fairwell, Darryl Hamilton, and Nadia Hamilton—were also arrested and charged with murder. Additionally, Darryl and Nadia Hamilton faced charges for possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
