In the small community of Pendleton, South Carolina, the autumn of 2015 brought with it a chilling event that would leave a lasting scar. Terry Michael Scott, a 58-year-old White male, was found deceased in his home in what would become a complex and drawn-out homicide investigation. On November 2, 2015, the bodies of Terry, his 60-year-old wife Cathy Scott, his 80-year-old mother Barbara Scott, and his 85-year-old mother-in-law Violet Taylor were discovered.
The scene within the house on Refuge Road was one of extreme violence; there were no signs of a forced entry, suggesting the victims may have known their attacker.
The investigation revealed the four family members had suffered brutal deaths. Terry Scott, his mother, and his mother-in-law had their throats slashed, while his wife, Cathy, died from a stab wound to the chest. Adding to the gruesomeness, Terry, Barbara, and Violet were also shot after they had died. Cathy was shot while she was still alive, although the knife wound was determined to be the cause of death. For years, the case remained unsolved, casting a shadow over the community as investigators worked to piece together the events that transpired. A bowl of Halloween candy left untouched near the door led authorities to believe the murders could have occurred as early as October 31, 2015.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in December 2023, more than eight years after the murders. Authorities arrested Terry's stepdaughter, Amy Vilardi, who was 40 at the time, and her 36-year-old husband, Rosmore 'Ross' Vilardi. The couple, who lived in another home on the same property, were charged with four counts of murder. Investigators had considered them persons of interest from the early stages of the investigation. The Vilardis had married just a week before the killings, and the suspected motive behind the brutal slayings was a six-figure inheritance.
Following their arrests, Amy and Ross Vilardi were denied bond and remained incarcerated at the Anderson County detention center. The case against them also included allegations of forgery and attempts to illegally claim ownership of vehicles and other assets belonging to the victims. For years, the couple had been involved in litigation over these claims. While the arrests brought a sense of progress for the family and community who had long awaited answers, the legal proceedings were just beginning to unfold.
