In the early morning hours of February 6, 2016, the life of Cecil Gilliam, a 40-year-old male, was tragically cut short in Woodruff, South Carolina. Woodruff police were dispatched to a house on Sharpe Street around 4 a.m. following a report of a disturbance involving a weapon. Upon arrival, they discovered Gilliam, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He ultimately succumbed to his injuries, having been shot seven times.
An investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect, Adriel N. Garnett, then 32 years old. A witness at the scene identified Garnett as the shooter and stated that he fled the area in a smoke-grey Camaro with another individual. For five and a half months, Garnett managed to evade law enforcement. His time as a fugitive came to an end in Columbia, South Carolina, when local police responded to a disorderly conduct complaint. Garnett provided a false name and resisted arrest, but he was ultimately taken into custody.
During his four-day murder trial, Garnett testified that the shooting was an act of self-defense. However, the prosecution, led by Assistant Solicitors Jennifer Jordan and Spenser Smith, presented a different narrative. They utilized eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence, and law enforcement testimony to argue that the number and location of the fatal wounds were inconsistent with a claim of self-defense. The jury ultimately found Adriel N. Garnett guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Garnett had a prior criminal record that included multiple drug offenses, assault on a police officer while resisting arrest, providing false information to police, and criminal domestic violence.
