On the evening of March 31, 2016, a tragic event unfolded on the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina, ending the life of 24-year-old Lindsey Priscilla Bedenk. Authorities discovered Bedenk and a 30-year-old man, Charles William Best Jr., in the pedestrian lane of the bridge with severe trauma. Both were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina where they succumbed to their injuries.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed that both individuals died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Lindsey, a compassionate and adventurous young woman, was born in Santiago, Chile, and grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her love for nature and animals led her to a career as a certified veterinary technician. She had moved to Charleston two years prior to be with her wife, Melissa Bedenk. Friends and family remember her as a fun-loving person whose joy touched everyone she met.
The investigation into the deaths of Bedenk and Best concluded that they had entered into a suicide pact. Investigators found two handguns at the scene, along with suicide notes and a video the pair had made bidding farewell to their loved ones. It is believed that Bedenk and Best met while receiving counseling for mental health issues and developed a friendship. Mount Pleasant Police Chief Carl Ritchie stated that for reasons that may never be fully known, they decided to carry out the suicide pact on the bridge. He emphasized that this was an isolated incident and that no other individuals were believed to be involved. Consequently, there were no suspects or arrests in connection with their deaths.
