In the spring of 2016, a violent encounter in Pelzer, South Carolina, claimed the life of Zachary Kyle Whitley, a 31-year-old white male. On the evening of April 17th, Whitley was shot in the chest in the front yard of a residence on Eastview Road. The incident, which also resulted in serious injuries to three other individuals, was quickly determined by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office not to be a random act of violence or a home invasion.
Witnesses indicated that the victims were acquainted with their assailants.
Investigators believed the shooting stemmed from a dispute over money or a drug transaction. The Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed that a single gunshot wound to the chest was the cause of Whitley's death. In the immediate aftermath, authorities sought the public's help in locating three male suspects. One was described as being in his early twenties with a slender face, wearing jeans and a black cutoff t-shirt. Another had long, blonde-dyed dreadlocks and was wearing a vibrant green and yellow Bob Marley jacket. The third suspect also had dreadlocks and was seen in a white hat and shirt. The trio was reported to have fled the scene in a mid to late 2000s silver, four-door Toyota with tinted windows, driven by a woman with short, heavy-set hair.
For years, the case remained a complex and challenging investigation for law enforcement. A significant breakthrough finally came in February 2024, when the Greenville County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 34-year-old John Wesley Nix. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Zachary Whitley. Sheriff Hobart Lewis characterized the fatal incident as a 'drug deal gone bad.' While Nix's arrest marked a pivotal development in the long-unsolved case, the two other male suspects involved in the shooting remain at large. The investigation continues as authorities persist in their efforts to identify and apprehend the other individuals responsible for Whitley's death.
