In the quiet town of Pelzer, South Carolina, a tragic event unfolded that would leave the community in shock. On March 5, 2014, Victor Hunt Vandegrift, a 48-year-old auto paint and body specialist, was fatally shot in a grim triple homicide. The incident, which also claimed the lives of 40-year-old Wanda Anderson and 32-year-old Hank Eaton, took place at a residence on Law Street, shattering the peace of the neighborhood.
The violence erupted from a heated argument inside the home.
The perpetrator, identified as Jared Michael Williams, escalated the confrontation by brandishing a handgun and opening fire on those present. A fourth individual was also injured during the attack but managed to escape to a neighbor's house to summon help, which ultimately led authorities to the horrific scene.
Following the shootings, Williams fled in a stolen vehicle, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through the countryside. The pursuit came to an end when Williams crashed the vehicle and was apprehended. He was initially taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries before being transferred to the Anderson County Detention Center.
In the ensuing investigation, Williams faced three counts of murder. His girlfriend, Hope Kristian Phillips, was also implicated and charged with accessory after the fact of murder and a murder charge in connection with Wanda Anderson's death, as it was alleged that she had lured Anderson to the house where the shooting occurred. The legal process concluded with Jared Michael Williams pleading guilty to the murders, for which he received three consecutive life sentences, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the devastating act of violence that cut short the lives of Victor Vandegrift and two others.
