In the spring of 2016, a young Black man's life was cut short in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Savon Quincy Scales, a 22-year-old male from Burton, was fatally shot on the evening of Monday, April 18, 2016. The incident occurred on Old Bailey Road, where an argument escalated into deadly violence.
Authorities were called to a residence at 402 Bailey Road around 8 p.m. and found Scales on the ground in front of the home with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the arrival of Jasper County EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed pointed to an altercation that preceded the shooting.
The primary suspect in the death of Savon Quincy Scales was identified as 26-year-old Anthony Barry Bolden Jr., a resident of Ridgeland. Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between Bolden and Scales' girlfriend, who were related. It is thought that Scales attempted to intervene in the argument, which then led to the fatal confrontation with Bolden.
Later that same night, influenced by his family members, Anthony Barry Bolden Jr. surrendered to authorities at the Jasper County Sheriff's Office. He was described as cooperative and was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Savon Quincy Scales. A weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting, though it was not immediately confirmed if it was the weapon used in the homicide. The case was investigated by the Jasper County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
