On August 5, 2017, violence erupted in the early morning hours in Orangeburg, South Carolina, resulting in the untimely death of 26-year-old Black male Michael Hartwell. The incident took place around 12:20 a.m. on Whittaker Parkway, drawing the attention of local law enforcement and emergency responders. Witnesses in the area reported a tense interaction between two individuals that rapidly escalated.
According to accounts provided to investigators, a man was seen approaching a truck parked across the street. The owner of the vehicle, who was observing the scene, reportedly walked toward both the truck and the individual near it.
Moments later, the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and witnesses turned to discover Hartwell lying on the ground, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The shooter allegedly departed the scene shortly after the confrontation. Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell later expressed frustration over the tragedy, describing the killing as senseless and questioning why the two men were unable to resolve their differences without resorting to violence. The Orangeburg County Coroner identified Hartwell as the victim of the shooting.
Following an investigation led by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, authorities identified 37-year-old Curran Jennings of Dillon, South Carolina, as the primary suspect. Investigators were initially able to communicate with Jennings by phone before conducting an official interview. Two days after the shooting, Jennings appeared in court where he was formally charged with murder in connection with Hartwell's death. During the hearing, he was informed that any decisions regarding his bond would be deferred to a circuit court judge.
