In the early hours of Labor Day on September 4, 2017, the life of 28-year-old Matthew Rodney Simmons of Moncks Corner, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in North Charleston, South Carolina. Simmons sustained multiple gunshot wounds during an incident that unfolded as a failed burglary attempt.
Authorities responded to the scene to find Simmons fatally wounded.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was the result of the gunshot wounds he suffered. The investigation into the violent encounter quickly pointed to a suspect.
Later that same morning, law enforcement officers arrested 29-year-old Jeremy Louis Woods in connection with the shooting. Woods was subsequently charged with murder, first-degree burglary, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. The North Charleston police indicated that the fatal shooting occurred while Woods was attempting to burglarize the location. The case against Woods then proceeded through the judicial system.
