On the evening of February 17, 2018, tragedy struck a residence on Benedict Street in Columbia, South Carolina, involving Cisco Vandelly Knightner Jr., a 17-year-old Black male. The teenager was gathered with friends in what began as a leisurely night of playing video games on a PlayStation 4. What was intended to be a social gathering took a violent turn shortly after midnight when a disagreement erupted among the group.
As the friends played a basketball video game, a petty argument
escalated into a physical confrontation. During the dispute, a 16-year-old male, who had been described by the victim's family as a lifelong friend, produced a firearm. The suspect fired the weapon, striking Knightner in the head. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Knightner did not survive the injury and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the 16-year-old suspect turned himself in to authorities. The Columbia Police Department arrested the juvenile, charging him with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Due to his age at the time of the arrest, his identity was withheld from public release. Investigators recovered the firearm used in the shooting and noted that the incident appeared to stem from a trivial dispute rather than a premeditated act of malice, leaving the community and Knightner's family, including his younger sister Faith, grappling with the senseless loss of life.
