In the summer of 2018, a visit to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, ended in tragedy for 24-year-old Sylvester Lee Bellamy Jr. The male victim was in town for a new job and had only been in the city for a matter of hours before his life was cut short. On the evening of June 8th, Bellamy was in a public restroom located near the bustling area of Ocean Boulevard and 12th Avenue North when he was fatally shot.
The incident, which occurred as the popular Carolina Country Music Festival was getting underway, was an act of violence that quickly led to a thorough police investigation.
Law enforcement responded to the sound of gunshots and discovered Bellamy with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Investigators utilized surveillance footage to track the movements of individuals seen leaving the area shortly after the shooting. Within ninety minutes, officers located and detained two suspects, Terence Isacc Blackwell and Earl Rafel Gaddis, Jr., who were found to be in possession of the weapons used in the attack. It was later determined that Bellamy was unarmed at the time of the ambush.
The two men, both from North Carolina, were arrested and faced serious charges for their involvement in Bellamy's death. Blackwell was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, unlawful carry, and possession of a stolen pistol. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed a complex history for the accused, including a warrant for Blackwell's arrest in North Carolina for a previous violent crime. In a surprising turn of events, while out on bond for the Myrtle Beach murder, Earl Rafel Gaddis, Jr. was charged with another murder in North Carolina.
Ultimately, justice for Sylvester Lee Bellamy Jr. was served in a court of law. In April 2021, Terence Isacc Blackwell pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and received a sentence of 18 years in prison. A few months later, in July 2021, Earl Rafel Gaddis, Jr. was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. The conviction brought a close to a case that highlighted the senselessness of a violent act that took the life of a young man on the cusp of a new beginning.
