On June 19, 2018, a tragedy unfolded in a quiet neighborhood in Spartanburg, South Carolina, that shattered the peace of the local community. Rickeya Latrice Stroble, a 26-year-old Black female, was at her residence on Anderson Drive when violence erupted inside the home. Neighbors later recalled hearing sounds they initially mistook for fireworks, unaware that a lethal event was taking place just yards away.
The disturbance ultimately drew the attention of authorities to the house, where they made a grim discovery that would launch a homicide investigation.
Upon entering the residence, law enforcement officers found Rickeya deceased, having suffered fatal injuries. In a heartbreaking turn of events, her three young children—aged ten, six, and seven months—were also found inside the home. Fortunately, the children were physically unharmed despite the chaos that had occurred around them. They were immediately removed from the scene and placed into the custody of the Department of Social Services to ensure their safety and care while the investigation commenced.
The Spartanburg County Coroner and police investigators quickly pieced together the circumstances of the deaths. Beside Rickeya, they discovered the body of 31-year-old Darryl Lee Foster. Forensic evidence and the positioning of the bodies led authorities to classify the case as a murder-suicide. Detectives determined that Foster had fatally shot Rickeya before turning the weapon on himself. Because the sole suspect in the homicide died at the scene, no arrests were made, and the criminal case was effectively closed without a trial or conviction. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young mother whose life was cut short by domestic violence.
