In the quiet community of Conway, South Carolina, the lives of a father and son were brought to a tragic and violent end on a summer evening. On August 17, 2018, 59-year-old Robert Marion Ford Jr., a male, and his 25-year-old son, Robbie Stetson Ford, were found shot to death at their home. The initial discovery of their partially burned vehicle in a field in Nichols led police to their residence, where the grim reality of a double homicide began to unfold.
For two years, the case remained unsolved, leaving a community in suspense and a family searching for answers.
The investigation took a significant turn in August 2020 with the arrests of three individuals, revealing a sinister plot orchestrated from within the family. Robert's own daughter, Samantha Ford Rabon, was charged with orchestrating the murders. The motive, as prosecutors would later argue, was pure greed. Rabon stood to inherit approximately $1 million from her father's estate and life insurance policies. To carry out her plan, she enlisted the help of Randy Grainger, whom she hired to kill her father and half-brother. A third person, Teresa Martin, a cousin of Rabon, was also implicated for her role in the crime.
The subsequent legal proceedings laid bare the details of the conspiracy. Evidence presented at trial included DNA from cigarette butts and a skull cap found near the burned vehicle, which ultimately led investigators to Grainger. Both Grainger and Martin testified against Rabon during her trial. Martin, who had accepted a plea deal on a lesser charge of accessory after the fact, told the court that Rabon had asked her to connect her with Grainger for the purpose of carrying out the murders. In February 2024, Samantha Ford Rabon was convicted of two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder. She was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison, plus an additional 30 years, with no possibility of parole.
Randy Grainger was also convicted for his role as the triggerman. In April 2023, a jury found him guilty of two counts of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and second-degree arson. He too received two consecutive life sentences. Teresa Martin, in exchange for her testimony, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for Robert and Robbie Ford, but also exposed a devastating betrayal born from a daughter's desire for financial gain, forever scarring a family and shocking the Conway community.
