In the quiet afternoon of February 26, 2019, a tragic event unfolded on the residential streets of Rock Hill, South Carolina, forever altering the lives of two families. Malik Khalil McCullough, a 23-year-old male, was discovered deceased inside a Chevrolet Impala that had crashed into a fence at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Jones Avenue. Alongside him was his friend, 20-year-old Zuinquarius McCrorey, who had also been fatally shot.
Both men were found in the front seats of the vehicle with gunshot wounds, turning an initial emergency call for a car accident into a double homicide investigation.
The investigation into the deaths of McCullough and McCrorey quickly revealed a chilling narrative of betrayal. What was initially a ride with a supposed friend turned into a calculated execution. The individual responsible was identified as 16-year-old Sam Saadiq Robinson. The day before the killings, Robinson had fired shots at McCullough's home, terrorizing his family. On the day of the murders, Robinson was in the back seat of the car as McCullough and McCrorey sat in the front. In a premeditated act, he shot both of his friends in the back of the head. After the car, still in drive, rolled to a stop, Robinson exited the vehicle and, in a startling display of deception, pretended to render aid to the victims as first responders arrived.
In the days following the murders, Robinson was apprehended in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his family had taken him in an attempt to hide him from law enforcement. He was subsequently extradited back to South Carolina to face charges as an adult. The motive for this senseless act of violence was reported to be tied to Robinson's desire to gain status within the Crips gang. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Robinson had bragged about his gang affiliations and the killings.
Ultimately, Sam Saadiq Robinson pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and five weapons charges. In March 2021, at the age of 18, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murders of Malik McCullough and Zuinquarius McCrorey. During the sentencing, the fathers of both victims spoke of the need for justice and an end to such violence, expressing their profound loss while forgiving the young man who had taken their sons' lives.
