In the summer of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the late-night quiet of a neighborhood in Hanahan, South Carolina, leaving two teenagers dead. On the night of July 19th, officers from both the Hanahan and North Charleston police departments converged on Corner Avenue around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. There, they discovered a tragic scene. One of the victims, 18-year-old Timothy Z. Wright, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim, 19-year-old Keyon Q.
White, was found with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. The Berkeley County Coroner's Office later confirmed the identities of both young men. In the immediate aftermath, investigators also learned of a third individual who had been injured in the shooting and was receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.
The Hanahan Police Department, with assistance from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and the coroner's office, launched an intensive investigation into the double homicide that had shaken the community. Their efforts soon led to breaks in the case. On July 23, 2019, authorities made their first arrest, taking a juvenile into custody on a charge of obstruction of justice. The following day, a second arrest was made. Raquan Hughes, a 19-year-old from the nearby city of Goose Creek, was apprehended and faced more serious charges, including accessory to murder and obstruction of justice, in connection with the fatal shootings of Keyon White and Timothy Wright.
