Willie Antoine Fields, an 18-year-old Black male, had his life cut short in August 2019. The young man was first reported missing in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and was later found shot to death. His violent death brought profound grief to his family and the local community.
An investigation into the killing led authorities to arrest Lindy Lamont Jones.
Jones's brother was also arrested and charged in connection with Willie's death.
In July 2022, Lindy Lamont Jones pleaded guilty to the murder of Willie Fields. The plea was entered the day before his sentencing hearing was scheduled to take place in an Orangeburg County courtroom.
On July 14, 2022, during the emotional sentencing hearing, Willie's family members stood to address the court. As his mother was speaking through tears, Willie's father, Willie Clay Fields, was overcome with grief. He rushed toward his son's killer, punching the handcuffed Jones from behind and tackling him to the ground before court officers could intervene and pull the men apart.
Willie Clay Fields was charged with contempt of court and third-degree assault and battery for the outburst. He was taken to jail and later released. His attorney, Justin Bamberg, released a statement on the family's behalf, saying they were "extremely apologetic." Bamberg added, “No father should have to bury his innocent son. Mr. Fields is not a criminal. He is a victim of senseless violence that occurs far too often in our communities.” Jones did not wish to pursue charges against him for the attack. As a result of the incident, the judge postponed Lindy Jones's sentencing. As of July 2022, Jones awaited his new sentencing date, facing a possible sentence of up to life in prison.
