On a tragic evening in Belton, South Carolina, the life of 21-year-old Sabrina Louise Lowery was cut short in a brutal act of violence. On February 13, 2020, Lowery, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was shot and killed in her own home. The devastating incident also claimed the life of her unborn son, who she had planned to name Shawn Alex James Lowery.
The scene that unfolded at Lowery's residence on Byron Circle was one of horror and heartbreak.
When Anderson County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they found Lowery with a gunshot wound. Another man, 33-year-old Tamell Nash of Anderson, was also discovered at the scene, having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. Lowery was rushed to the hospital, but tragically, neither she nor her unborn child could be saved. She left behind her two young daughters, who were unfortunately present during the horrific event.
In the wake of the double homicide, the investigation led to the arrest of Jazoveon Zae'kewon Mackey. He was taken into custody in Georgia and subsequently extradited to South Carolina to face charges for his alleged involvement in the deaths of Lowery, her unborn son, and Nash. Mackey was charged with three counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
During a bond hearing, it was revealed that three other men were believed to have been with Mackey on the night of the shooting. The motive for the crime was stated to be a 'botched robbery,' with the assailants targeting the wrong house. In a heart-wrenching statement to the court, Sabrina's mother-in-law described the lasting trauma inflicted on her grandchildren, who witnessed the violent deaths of their mother and unborn sibling.
Following his arrest and extradition, Jazoveon Zae'kewon Mackey was tried for the murders. In October 2021, a jury found him guilty on all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murders of Sabrina Louise Lowery, her unborn son Shawn, and Tamell Nash. While one perpetrator was brought to justice, the family continues to remember the vibrant young mother whose life, along with that of her son, was so senselessly taken.
