In the early hours of May 10, 2020, a dispute over a minor traffic incident in Gaffney, South Carolina, escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 30-year-old Andre Rashard Gregory. Witnesses reported that Gregory and another man were engaged in a verbal argument after a vehicle was sideswiped. The confrontation tragically culminated in Gregory being shot and killed on West Robinson Street.
He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled but was apprehended by Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies shortly after. The Gaffney Police Department identified the individual as Dominique Dashawn Byers, then 27 years old. An investigation led by detectives resulted in Byers being charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was taken into custody at his home on Tansi Trail in Gaffney on the same day as the shooting.
In February 2023, the legal proceedings against Dominique Dashawn Byers concluded with a plea deal. Byers, then 30, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The emotional court hearing resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for his role in the death of Andre Rashard Gregory.
