In the spring of 2020, a dispute over money between two men in Columbia, South Carolina, escalated into a fatal encounter. Khamori Davelle Scott, a 24-year-old Black male, was shot and killed on May 26, 2020. His death was the culmination of a financial disagreement with Telvin Quintavis Jackson. The Richland County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Scott died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The conflict began over a financial scheme and intensified in the days leading up to the
shooting. On the night of the incident, Scott, along with several other individuals, went to Jackson's home on Weiss Drive to demand money he believed he was owed. They blocked Jackson's car in the driveway, and Scott reportedly approached Jackson with a gun, demanding the payment. Jackson handed over the money, which Scott then threw back at him before walking away.
Though the initial confrontation seemed to have ended, Jackson left his residence and went to his father's home to get a loaded handgun. As he drove back to his house, Jackson called 911, expressing his anger and stating his intention to shoot Scott. Upon his return, Jackson confronted Scott and shot him once. Scott was able to call 911 and identify Jackson as the shooter before he was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement officers who had been dispatched to the scene for a reported armed robbery found Scott with a gunshot wound. The shooter, identified as Telvin Quintavis Jackson, surrendered his weapon at the scene and was immediately taken into custody by the Richland County Sheriff's Department. Jackson was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. The case went to trial, and on June 27, 2024, a Richland County jury convicted Jackson of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in Khamori Scott's death.
