Deborah Elaine Buchanan, a 68-year-old female, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020, in a tragic incident at her place of business in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The event unfolded around 1:15 p.m. at the H&R Block located on Main Street, a business she owned. Authorities who arrived at the scene discovered two individuals deceased.
The investigation by the Fort Mill Police Department and the York County Coroner's Office soon revealed the incident to be a murder-suicide.
It was determined that James Alexander Vinton, 39, of Rock Hill, had fatally shot his mother-in-law, Deborah Elaine Buchanan, before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the shooting, the H&R Block was open, and there were other people present in the establishment and adjacent businesses. Fortunately, no one else was physically harmed during the incident. While the investigation continued to determine a motive, sources close to the victim indicated that the shooting may have stemmed from a family issue related to the business. As the perpetrator died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with this case.
