In the winter of 2021, a young life was abruptly cut short in Greer, South Carolina. Zakiya Synercia Drinkard-McKinney, a 19-year-old Black female, was fatally shot on the evening of February 8th at the Poplar Place Apartments. The Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed that she died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Another person was also injured during the incident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The Greer Police Department responded to the shooting and
quickly began an investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect later that same day. Due to the suspect's age, their name was not publicly released. The teenager faced serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities indicated that they believed the shooting was an isolated event and that there was no further danger to the community.
While an arrest was made, the motive behind the tragic event remained under investigation as detectives worked to understand the circumstances that led to the violence. Zakiya was a daughter, a sister to nine siblings, and a friend to many. Her death left a void in the lives of her loved ones and the wider Greenville community.
