On the evening of March 5, 2021, Dwon 'D.J.' Fields Jr., an 18-year-old male, was driving in Bluffton, South Carolina, with two friends. A promising high school senior and a defensive lineman for the Bluffton High School football team, he had just committed to attend Greenville Technical College to study welding the day before. What began as a seemingly ordinary night, leaving a Wendy's parking lot, tragically turned into his last.
In a devastating case of mistaken identity, another vehicle pursued them, and its occupants unleashed a hail of gunfire upon Fields' car. He was struck and died at the scene, while his two passengers sustained injuries.
The investigation that followed revealed the senseless nature of the violence. A group of individuals had an ongoing dispute with others and believed Fields' car belonged to their rivals. Siblings Shayniah and Jayden Void spotted Fields' vehicle and mistakenly identified it to the shooters, setting in motion the fatal chain of events. Authorities determined that Fields and his friends were innocent victims who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The community, shocked and saddened by the loss of a young man described as a 'gentle giant,' mourned the popular student and athlete.
In the aftermath, law enforcement identified and arrested multiple suspects connected to the shooting. Jimmie Green pleaded guilty to murder and five other charges in May 2023 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Five months later, a jury found Ty'Leic Chaneyfield guilty of murder and several other offenses, resulting in a life sentence. Jayden Void, who had pointed out Fields' car to the gunmen, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery by mob and received a 12-year prison sentence. His sister, Shayniah Void, also pleaded guilty to assault and battery by mob and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. The fifth and final suspect, Messiah Kasheef Anderson, who was 15 at the time of the incident, was also charged.
