In the late summer of 2021, the community of Loris, South Carolina, was unsettled by a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 35-year-old Latarius Evans. A Black male from the neighboring town of Tabor City, North Carolina, Evans was discovered deceased near Bennett Loop on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 22, 2021. The Horry County Police Department was called to the scene around 1 p.m., where they found Evans lying face down.
The subsequent investigation, led by the Horry County
Police Department, quickly determined that Evans's death was a homicide. The Horry County Deputy Coroner confirmed that he had sustained at least one fatal gunshot wound. At the time of the discovery, a group of people was reportedly present at the scene, though initial reports did not clarify their connection to the incident.
