Jonathan Ruperto Smith, a 21-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of December 11, 2021, at the Chatham Place Apartments in North Charleston, South Carolina. At about 4:30 p.m., North Charleston police were dispatched to the area of Chatham Avenue near Remount Road and North Murray Drive after reports of gunfire. Officers arrived to find Smith suffering from a gunshot wound, along with another person who had also been shot.
Both victims were transported for emergency medical treatment. Smith was taken to Trident Medical Center, where he died from his injuries shortly after the shooting. Investigators found evidence of a significant exchange of gunfire at the apartment complex, with bullets also striking vehicles and apartment units.
The investigation quickly began producing arrests. On December 14, 2021, North Charleston police arrested Jaylin D. Williams, who was 18 at the time. Police said Williams had been present when the shooting occurred and had removed evidence from the scene afterward. He was initially charged with accessory after the fact of murder. Two days later, on December 16, authorities upgraded the case against Williams to a murder charge, indicating that investigators believed the evidence connected him more directly to Smith's killing.
Detectives later identified Levi Richardson III as another suspect in the homicide. Richardson, also 18 at the time, eventually turned himself in at the Al Cannon Detention Center. Police charged him with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Investigators identified Richardson as the person they believed shot and killed Smith. With Richardson and Williams both facing murder allegations, the case developed into a prosecution involving multiple alleged participants in the events surrounding the deadly shooting.
Both defendants were later released on bond while their cases remained pending. Richardson was granted a $50,000 consolidated bond and was released in March 2022. Williams was later granted a $50,000 consolidated surety bond on February 28, 2023, and was released from the Al Cannon Detention Center in March. Their legal troubles continued while the murder cases were pending. In June 2023, North Charleston police arrested Williams and Richardson again following an encounter in which officers reported recovering multiple handguns, crack cocaine, other suspected drugs, a digital scale and cash. Williams was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and unlawful carrying of a handgun, while Richardson was charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun. A third man was also arrested during that incident.
Court proceedings connected to Smith's case have continued for years, with records reflecting bond hearings, motions and other pretrial activity. Williams' bond was later revoked in 2023, and additional court activity continued afterward. Publicly available court information has shown subsequent proceedings involving Williams, but the records previously located did not clearly establish a final murder conviction, acquittal or dismissal in Smith's homicide case.
The case is now coming back before the court, with proceedings scheduled to begin Monday, August 10, 2026, at the downtown Family Court, according to information provided by Smith's family. The upcoming court appearance marks another significant stage in a case that has remained active for years after Smith was killed. The hearing is expected to bring renewed attention to the prosecution and could provide further clarity about the status of the defendants, the charges still pending, and the next steps toward a final resolution.
