In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 9, 2022, the life of 24-year-old Alan Philpeon Johnson, III, was tragically cut short in North Charleston, South Carolina. A male of Sumter, Johnson was a beloved son and an honor student who had overcome significant adversity in his youth to earn a scholarship to Morris College. He was known for his fun-loving and kind personality.
North Charleston Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence on Suzanne Drive at approximately
3:58 a.m. for a medical call. Upon their arrival, they were met by 21-year-old Asherai Gadsden, who directed them to check on Johnson. Emergency medical services pronounced Johnson dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
As the investigation into the shooting unfolded, authorities determined that Gadsden was involved in the incident. She was subsequently arrested and charged with murder for her role in Johnson's death and is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center. According to Johnson's mother, Latarasha Foy-Richardson, it was believed that two other suspects had not yet been apprehended. The investigation by the North Charleston Police Department is ongoing.
