In the winter of 2022, a young life was tragically cut short in Greenville, South Carolina. Joseph Clarke Smith, a 27-year-old male, was found deceased in his apartment on Edwards Road on Saturday, January 22, 2022. The initial discovery launched an investigation that would soon uncover a fatal robbery.
Authorities determined that Smith's death was a homicide resulting from a planned home invasion.
Investigators pieced together a sequence of events indicating that on the day of the incident, an individual had entered Smith's apartment to confirm he was asleep. Approximately 90 minutes later, that individual returned with two accomplices. The three, armed and wearing masks, proceeded to rob the apartment. During the course of the robbery, Joseph Clarke Smith was shot twice, succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
In connection with the murder, three individuals were arrested. Tyberious Pyles, who was 22 at the time of the offense, Dream Adams, then 19, and an unidentified 15-year-old were taken into custody. Warrants revealed that Pyles admitted his involvement in the crime. The investigation led to charges of murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery, and conspiracy for the suspects.
The legal process brought one of the perpetrators to justice. A Greenville County jury convicted Tyberious Pyles on all charges related to the deadly shooting. For his role in the murder of Joseph Clarke Smith and the associated crimes, Pyles was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison. The legal proceedings for his co-defendant, Dream Adams, were still pending following Pyles' conviction. Due to the third suspect's age, no further information about their identity or case has been publicly released.
