In the early hours of Sunday, January 23, 2022, a night out turned tragic for Phillip Campbell, a 31-year-old Black male from Robeson County, North Carolina. The fatal incident occurred at Club Reflexxions, a nightclub located on Highway 301 North in the small community of Hamer, South Carolina. A dispute that began inside the club escalated and spilled out into the parking lot, where gunfire erupted. Campbell was struck and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The Dillon County Coroner's Office subsequently identified him as the victim of the deadly shooting.
The investigation into Campbell's death, led by the Dillon County Sheriff's Office, moved forward, and by mid-February, two suspects were in custody. On February 12, 2022, Austin H. Fairley, 24, of Red Springs, and Chandler T. Lowry, 23, of Shannon, were apprehended. Their arrests were the result of a coordinated effort involving the Robeson County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Division, the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Fugitive Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Both men were charged as fugitives from another state for murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
In addition to the murder-related charges, Fairley and Lowry also faced a host of drug-related offenses, including conspiracy to traffic cocaine and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and/or deliver controlled substances. The investigation also pointed to the involvement of two other individuals. Authorities identified Sincir McLean, 20, and Arron Fairley, 21, as additional suspects wanted in connection with Campbell's death. They were sought on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The case highlighted a broader issue of violence that investigators believed was connected to other shootings in the surrounding areas of Red Springs and Shannon.
