Do you know who murdered Devon Robinson? In the summer of 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in downtown Louisville. Nineteen-year-old Devon Robinson was waiting for a bus on the morning of July 2nd, at the corner of South Fifth and West Liberty streets, a block away from the site of ongoing nightly protests. It was a visit to his father that he was anticipating, a simple trip that he would never complete.
In the broad daylight of that Thursday, what began as an assault quickly escalated into a fatal encounter that would leave a family mourning and a community searching for answers.
The events that unfolded at the bus stop were violent and swift. Robinson was reportedly involved in an ongoing feud and was being pursued by individuals he knew. He was assaulted by a group of young men, and as he tried to escape, he was shot. First responders found him with gunshot wounds and rushed him to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. A witness at the scene performed CPR in a desperate attempt to save his life before medical help arrived, an act of compassion his family later acknowledged with gratitude. In the aftermath, his grandmother expressed the family's profound need for closure and an understanding of the senseless act that took her grandson's life.
The investigation into Devon Robinson's death led to the arrests of several individuals. Three men, D'Montray Rox, Kelvonnie Harris, and Amontre Eastern, would later plead guilty to an amended charge of facilitation of murder. They admitted to their role in the assault that preceded the shooting. The investigation revealed that the fatal shot was fired by a juvenile who was also implicated in the crime. In October 2022, Rox, Harris, and Eastern were each sentenced to five years in prison for their involvement in the events that led to Robinson's death. Another individual, Traymont Beaumont, was also named as a suspect, and it was reported that two of the suspects, who were minors at the time of the incident, would be tried as adults.
