In the quiet community of Anderson, South Carolina, a domestic tragedy unfolded, forever altering the lives of a local family. On the evening of March 22, 2022, 33-year-old Kayla Jo Hamby was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound inside a room at the InTown Suites on Cinema Center. The initial call to authorities reported a possible suicide attempt, but the subsequent investigation would reveal a much darker and more violent truth.
First responders arrived at the motel to find
Hamby critically injured. She was immediately transported to AnMed Health Medical Center and later airlifted to Prisma Health Greenville Hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, the damage was too extensive. Two days later, on March 24, 2022, Kayla Hamby was pronounced brain dead. She remained on life support to allow for organ donation, a final act of giving in a life cut tragically short. Her death was officially ruled a homicide by the Anderson County Coroner's Office.
The initial narrative of a self-inflicted wound quickly unraveled as investigators from the Anderson County Sheriff's Office delved into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Evidence and interviews soon pointed towards Hamby's husband, Keenan Trentle Anderson, who was present in the motel room at the time of the incident. Following a thorough investigation, Keenan Anderson was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Kayla Hamby. He was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
The case against Keenan Anderson proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial where the prosecution laid out the evidence gathered from the crime scene and witness testimonies. In April of 2024, a jury found Keenan Trentle Anderson guilty of the murder of Kayla Jo Hamby. He was subsequently sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder charge and an additional five years for the weapons charge, to be served concurrently.
