In a tragic turn of events, the life of 18-year-old Nathaniel Xavier Johnson was cut short on June 9, 2022, in Lyman, South Carolina. A recent graduate of Greer High School, the White/Caucasian male had a promising future ahead with aspirations of joining the Army Rangers.
On the night of June 8, 2022, Nathaniel was discovered with a gunshot wound on Wild Cherry Circle. He was found lying in the road and was immediately transported to Spartanburg Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following day. The investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident was related to a domestic issue. According to his mother, Nathaniel was unarmed and attempting to protect a friend when he was shot.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office swiftly identified 17-year-old Caleb Emmanuel Pietras as the suspected shooter. Pietras was apprehended the day after the shooting in the neighboring Greenville County. Due to the severity of the crime, he was charged as an adult with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a pistol. Following his arrest, Pietras was denied bond and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man described as hardworking and kind-hearted. Nathaniel was actively involved in the SC Junior Cattlemen's Association and was a wrestler at his high school. Tragically, this was not the first time his family had been struck by such a devastating loss; Nathaniel's father had also been murdered in September 2019.
