On a tragic day in June of 2022, 62-year-old Raymond Brown was found deceased in his Eutawville, South Carolina home. Alongside him was the body of 66-year-old Jean Ann Brown of Cross, South Carolina. Both individuals had been fatally shot.
The discovery was made after family members reported them missing when they failed to return from a doctor's appointment. They had a one-year-old child with them at the time.
When Orangeburg County deputies arrived at Raymond Brown's residence on Wesgar Avenue, they found a key in the front door. Upon entering, they discovered Jean Ann Brown's body near the entryway and subsequently found Raymond Brown's body nearby.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify a suspect, 46-year-old Antonio Smalls of Moncks Corner. He was located and arrested in North Charleston. The missing one-year-old child was found abandoned but safe inside a car at a gas station in St. George.
Following his arrest, Smalls confessed to the murders and the kidnapping of the child. He was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of weapon possession during a violent crime, and kidnapping. Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell described the killings as a 'senseless, senseless act.' The relationship, if any, between Smalls and the victims was not immediately disclosed.
