In the summer of 2018, a dispute in Eutawville, South Carolina, tragically cut short the life of 23-year-old Jervaughn McKins. On August 12th, McKins was shot in the abdomen. He was privately transported to an emergency substation before being transferred to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries later that same day. The man who dropped him off at the substation quickly fled the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect: 23-year-old
Andrew Maxswane Evins. Authorities believe the shooting was the result of a dispute between Evins and McKins. Following the incident, Evins fled the state, prompting a manhunt that extended up the East Coast. The U.S. Marshals Service was brought in to assist the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Department in locating the fugitive.
Investigators developed information that Evins had traveled to Connecticut. Their search led them to a Rodeway Inn in Stratford, nearly 800 miles from the scene of the crime. On August 21, 2018, members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Stratford Police Department apprehended Evins at the motel without incident. He was taken into custody and charged as a fugitive from justice, with underlying warrants for murder and possession of a weapon. During a court hearing in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Evins waived his right to extradition, expressing his desire to return to South Carolina to face the charges against him.
