In the summer of 2002, 30-year-old Marc Charles Springer, an avid and experienced outdoorsman from Ogden, Utah, traveled to the remote and formidable landscape of Southeast Alaska. He was part of a four-person climbing party with his best friends, embarking on a weeklong trip to ascend the challenging 9,077-foot Devils Thumb, a granite peak rising from the Stikine Icecap near Petersburg. A passionate climber and a proud member of the Powder Mountain Ski Patrol, Marc found solace and a sense of spirituality in the mountains. Tragically, his last contact with anyone was on July 26, 2002, during this expedition in the vast wilderness of the Petersburg Borough. The details surrounding Marc's disappearance are harrowing. After successfully summiting Devils Thumb on July 23rd, the group remained on the mountain. On the night of July 26th, or in the early hours of the following morning, Marc reportedly attempted to climb to a higher elevation to get better cell phone reception. It was during this ascent that a section of the rock face is believed to have crumbled, causing him to fall approximately 50 feet and triggering a significant rock slide. The avalanche of rock, with at least one boulder described as being as large as a car, buried him. One of his climbing partners, Mike Anderson, was with him on the mountain and tragically spent two nights alone in the vicinity of where his friend was buried. Due to the immense size of the rocks and the treacherous, remote location, authorities determined that a recovery mission was not feasible. The Alaska State Troopers stated that it would require sizable equipment to move the rocks, an operation they were unable to accomplish. The beautiful but unforgiving mountain that Marc so loved became his final resting place. The case, while having a known tragic outcome, remains officially open in missing persons databases, a testament to a life lost in the pursuit of alpine passion. Marc was a man known for his strong character, his word as solid as the rock he climbed, and an ability to make strangers feel like friends within moments. His loss was deeply felt by his family and the wide circle of friends who admired his adventurous spirit.
