In the summer of 2022, a violent encounter in North Charleston, South Carolina, ended the life of 67-year-old Jagdishbhai Patel. The incident took place at the Charleston Heights Motel on Rivers Avenue, a business that Patel owned. On the evening of June 25, Patel was in the motel's main office with his wife when an altercation occurred. During the dispute, he was shot in the head.
His wife, who was on the phone with their son at the time, heard the gunshot and turned to find her husband on the ground, bleeding from his wound.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, his injuries proved to be too severe. After fighting for his life for five days, Jagdishbhai Patel succumbed to the gunshot wound and passed away on June 30, 2022. The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed that his death was a direct result of the injuries he sustained in the shooting.
The North Charleston Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, Darnell Dwayne Brown, who was 34 years old at the time. Brown was located and taken into custody shortly after the incident. Initially, he was charged with attempted murder. However, following Patel's death, the charges against Brown were upgraded to murder.
As the case moved toward trial, details of the investigation came to light. Prosecutors built their case around evidence collected from Brown's vehicle, which included a backpack containing a gun and latex gloves. While DNA found on the gloves was a match to Brown, the DNA on the firearm itself did not match his. The prosecution argued that the presence of the gloves indicated an attempt to avoid leaving fingerprints at the crime scene. Brown's trial for the murder of Jagdishbhai Patel began, with testimony from Patel's wife and son, as well as evidence presented by law enforcement, as the legal proceedings to bring justice for the death of the respected motel owner continued.
