On the early morning of February 14, 1900, 25-year-old male night patrolman Lowell Pew walked into the rail yards of Louisiana, Missouri, answering a call about suspicious men near the depot along the Mississippi River. A full moon lit the “K Line” area by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad depot as Pew and depot agent Frank Beacham searched in opposite directions, trying to box in whoever had been prowling around the freight house.
