Marshal Eddie Foster Middleton, aged 31, tragically lost his life on December 24, 1901, in New Franklin, Missouri. Middleton, who had been serving as the city marshal for eight months, was attempting to arrest a drunk man causing a disturbance on Main Street. Despite Middleton's orders for the man to leave the area, the individual refused to comply. As Middleton approached to make the arrest, the man drew a revolver and shot Middleton in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
