On January 13, 1903, the small community of Morehouse, Missouri, was shaken by the violent death of its Town Marshal, Dan Lance. The 36-year-old male officer was in the performance of his duties during a social gathering that turned into a scene of chaos. A dance was being held at a local private residence, an event intended for community enjoyment, but the atmosphere soured when a disturbance broke out involving two brothers who were reported to be intoxicated.
