Marshal William C. Manis, the City Marshal of Richland, Missouri, met a tragic end on July 27, 1906. His death occurred while he was attempting to arrest James C. Pritchett, an Army deserter. The sequence of events leading to this tragedy began when Pritchett enlisted in the United States Army at Muskogee in the Indian Territory on June 28, 1906.
