Sidney Leland Houghton, aged 65, was the Sheriff of Daviess County, Missouri, at the time of his tragic death on September 11, 1977. Sheriff Houghton was shot and killed by a 16-year-old boy whom he had just transported home after the boy crashed his car into a ditch. The incident occurred after Sheriff Houghton towed the boy's vehicle to Gallatin and then drove the boy and his mother to their home in a rural area approximately six miles northwest of Gallatin.
