On September 11, 1977, Sidney Leland Houghton, a 65-year-old male serving as the Sheriff of Daviess County, was on duty in Gallatin, Missouri, when he responded to a traffic violation. A 16-year-old boy had crashed his vehicle into a ditch, prompting the sheriff to intervene. Acting with the intent to assist, Sheriff Houghton arranged for the juvenile's car to be towed into town.
He then personally drove the teenager and the boy's mother to their home, situated in a rural area approximately six miles northwest of Gallatin.
The transport concluded around 3:00 a.m., and the sheriff prepared to leave the property. As he attempted to drive away, the youth exited the residence and flashed the porch light, drawing the officer's attention. The teenager walked toward the patrol car and opened the passenger-side door. In an unprovoked ambush, the boy brandished a. 22 caliber pistol and fired two shots at Houghton. The assailant then paused to reload the weapon before firing a third time at the sheriff.
Gallatin Police Chief Dale Cox arrived at the scene after responding to reports of the shooting. He discovered Sheriff Houghton lying face up in the road, still conscious despite his grave injuries. An ambulance was summoned immediately, but the sheriff succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital in Cameron. The slaying marked a devastating loss for the community, as Houghton was a respected figure who had served multiple terms as sheriff and came from a family of law enforcement officers.
Authorities arrested the 16-year-old subject following the incident. The investigation transitioned into a criminal trial where the youth faced severe charges for the premeditated attack. The legal process concluded with a conviction for first-degree murder. On December 7, 1978, the court handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, sealing the fate of the teenager responsible for the death of the veteran lawman.
