Rusty A. Donovan, a 42-year-old male, tragically lost his life on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in a shooting that took place at his workplace in North Kansas City, Missouri. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at the CVS located at 1914 Swift Street, where Donovan was an employee. When police responded to the reports of a shooting, they discovered Donovan deceased behind the checkout counter.
A suspect, identified as Antonio Serrano, was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
The investigation revealed a personal connection between the suspect and the victim. Serrano’s ex-partner, who was also a CVS employee, had been living with Donovan at the time of the fatal shooting. This personal relationship is believed to have been the motive for the attack. Serrano's ex-partner was not at the store at the time of the incident.
Antonio Serrano, 29, was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. According to court documents, Serrano allegedly shot Donovan multiple times, even after he had fallen to the ground. He then reportedly asked a witness to call 911. Colleagues and customers remembered Donovan as a kind and generous man who had worked for CVS for four years and had made a positive impact on those around him.
