Lieutenant Richard W. O. Gammill of the Joplin Police Department, Missouri, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained nine years earlier while investigating a shooting incident. On May 22, 1980, Lieutenant Gammill responded to a local hotel to assist in the investigation of a man who had reported being shot while driving on the interstate.
