John Wayne Freeman, born on January 6, 1962, tragically lost his life on December 8, 1988, in Mooresville, Missouri. His death was part of a series of murders orchestrated by Ray and Faye Copeland, a couple involved in a fraudulent check and cattle buying scheme. The Copelands lured homeless transients to their farm under the pretense of offering them work. Once the transients were involved in the scheme, they were murdered to prevent the fraudulent activities from being discovered.
