In the warm evening of June 12, 1990, a promising life was tragically cut short in Saint-Louis, Missouri. Lorenzo Rodgers, a 23-year-old male, was off-duty from his role as a police officer when he found himself in a fatal confrontation. He was standing in front of a laundromat at 532 Des Peres Avenue when a man, later identified as 20-year-old Lamarr Pearson, approached him and brandished a handgun in an attempt to commit a robbery.

instinctively drew his own service revolver to defend himself. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both men were struck. Despite being mortally wounded by a gunshot to the head, Officer Rodgers managed to return fire and hit Pearson in the leg, arm, and abdomen. The young officer succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his tour of duty with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department lasting only 14 months.
Pearson, injured and unable to flee far, collapsed nearby and was quickly apprehended by authorities. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Officer Lorenzo Rodgers. The case proceeded through the justice system, resulting in a conviction for Pearson. After serving time in prison, Lamarr Pearson was granted parole in June of 2010.
