In the early morning hours of April 5, 2009, 27-year-old William Earl Tramaine Harmon, known to friends and family as 'Will-Will,' was killed in a violent incident in Kansas City, Missouri. The shooting occurred at approximately 3:18 a.m. at a residence located at 1210 ½ Independence Avenue. According to reports from the time, witnesses indicated that a group of individuals had been gathering at the apartment, drinking and socializing, when gunshots rang out from another room, causing those
present to flee the scene in panic. Harmon suffered fatal gunshot wounds and his death was immediately investigated as a homicide by local authorities.
Prior to the shooting, investigators received information suggesting that Harmon had been seen traveling on a city bus with two other individuals. Detectives worked to piece together his movements leading up to the fatal encounter at the apartment. For several months, the case remained open as police followed leads and appealed to the public for information regarding the identity of the shooter. The investigation highlighted the difficulties law enforcement faced in solving such crimes within the community, with the case initially lingering among the city's list of unsolved homicides.
A significant breakthrough in the investigation came later that year. In late October 2009, Kansas City police announced the capture of a suspect in connection with Harmon's death. Ronald Taylor, who was 30 years old at the time of his arrest, was taken into custody following a violent crimes initiative by the department. Authorities formally charged Taylor with the murder of William Harmon, alleging he was the individual responsible for the shooting inside the Independence Avenue apartment. The arrest brought a measure of progress to a case that had left Harmon's family seeking answers for over six months.
